This past spring break we sent our third team to spend time in New Orleans helping with the relief effort at Trinity Church in Covington. Below is an excerpt from our last alumni newsletter. If you are interested in going with us the next time we go, please contact the church office at 509-334-9191 or email office@pullmancornerstone.org
When Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast in August 2005 the impact was felt throughout the world. It was not long before we had a sense that Cornerstone should help in some manner. As the days went by and we sorted through information we decided it would be best to help our sister E. Free church on the north shore of Lake Pontchatrain. Trinity Church lost 90% of their people due to the storm, but they were determined that, with God's help, they would minister to those around them.
With the help of TouchGlobal (the compassion minstry of the EFCA) they have done just that and it has been nothing short of amazing to see and life changing to participate in. We sent our first team to New Orleans on New Year's Eve 2005, another in May of 2006 and then again in March of 2007. The needs there remain great and we think that we will be sending yet another team in the future. Watch the video (below), look at the picture gallery and read the account of our last team. Perhaps God would have you go and help, too? We are thinking of taking our fourth team to New Orleans in March 2008.
This past spring break our nine member team traveled to New Orleans to be part of the ministry of Touch Global, the disaster relief ministry of the Evangelical Free Church of America. It was an amazing week of fellowship, service, and hard work as well as seeing God at work in this city. We could spend hours sharing stories and photos of our experience! Since we can only share one, we would like to share Miss Pat's story with you. Miss Pat rode out the storm and the flood sitting on her kitchen counter. Her home was severely damaged by the flood and at 68 years old, she was trying to do all the work herself. Although she was brought to the attention of Touch Global, she was not ready emotionally to have a group come and work on her home.
However, God was preparing just the right groups for her. First, five young ladies from Illinois whose love, patience, and humor was the key in intrducing her to Jesus. Our group joined theirs on Wednesday and Miss Pat, normally suspicious of men, really responded to the patience and gentleness of the guys in our group. Together, we were able to make significant progress on the house, but more importantly, we saw the Lord work in Miss Pat's life and in her neighborhood.
There is still so much work to be done! We would encourage you to check Touch Global (link above) to learn how you can pray and support this ministry--we know you will always come away encouraged by how awesome our God is! --Matt, Allie, Luke, Melanie, Teri, Dee, Sarah, Nick & Megan.
